Updated: Dec 19, 2021
It's important to know the 6 main classes of nutrients your body needs, and the important job that each one has in your health.

Carbohydrates (Carbs)
Carbs, like pasta, bread, fruits and vegetables, are made up of sugars, starches and fiber. They are a source of energy and consist of 4 calories per gram.
Fats
Fats, like olive oil, tree nuts and avocado, help with your body's absorption of vitamins A, D, E and K. They also give the body energy and consist of 9 calories per gram.
Proteins
Proteins, like chicken, lean beef and lamb, are responsible for muscle growth and repair. They produce just as much energy as carbs do and consist of 4 calories per gram.
Vitamins
Vitamins, like A, D, E and K, are required in small amounts. There are 13 known vitamins and the human body cannot produce them on it's own. Many vitamins are metabolic regulators that govern energy production.
Minerals
Minerals, like calcium, sodium and potassium, are needed for our bodies to function normally.
Water
Water, the most essential of them all, controls body temperature, energy production, can help maintain pH and electrolyte balance and helps transport other nutrients throughout the body.
